Stipend
NEH Summer Scholars receive a stipend of $3,450 to help cover travel and living expenses and the cost of housing. Please note that stipends are considered taxable income.
Housing
For those who wish to stay on campus, the university maintains apartment-style student housing, the Village Apartments, available for $45 per night. An apartment unit houses four people with four private/locking bedrooms, two bathrooms, a compact kitchen with standard refrigerator and common living space. Keep in mind this is student housing, so the units are not furnished with TV’s, coffee makers, hair dryers, microwaves, dishes, cups, utensils, pots and pans, etc. There is neither maid service nor linen exchange; the Student Village Apartments do have full-sized washers and dryers (you will need to bring your own detergent).
The Element, a hotel located adjacent to the university campus, offers complementary continental breakfast each morning as well as a saltwater pool and fitness center.
Food
In addition to several restaurants located in walking distance of SLU’s campus, as well as many more dining options in the nearby Midtown and Central West End neighborhoods, Institute participants can choose a meal-plan option for the summer. This meal plan will allow participants to enjoy three meals a day at Grand Hall, one of the main dining locations on SLU’s South Campus.
Exercise
The North Campus of Saint Louis University boasts several paths ideal for walking and running. In addition, participants will have access to Simon Recreational Center – which houses weight machines, an indoor track, swimming pool, basketball courts, racquet ball courts and more – for a nominal fee.
Parking
Parking will be offered on SLU’s campus for participants at a discounted rate of $55 for the duration of the Institute.
